NEW DELHI – The golden era of Indian television journalism lost one of its most iconic voices on Thursday, February 12, 2026, as veteran newsreader Sarla Maheshwari passed away at the age of 71.

Known for her impeccable Hindi diction and graceful screen presence, Maheshwari was a household name during the 1980s and 1990s, a period when Doordarshan served as the primary window to the world for millions across India.

A Career Defined by Grace and Credibility

Maheshwari’s journey with the public broadcaster began in 1976 while she was still a PhD student at Delhi University. After successfully auditioning as an announcer, her talent for clear communication quickly propelled her into the role of a news anchor.

For nearly three decades, until her retirement in 2005, she remained a steady and calming presence on national television. Her career was notable for several milestones:

  • The Great Transition: She was among the few anchors who successfully transitioned from the era of black-and-white broadcasting to vibrant color television.
  • Global Stint: Between 1984 and 1986, she worked as a newsreader with the BBC in the UK, bringing international standards of broadcast discipline back to Doordarshan when she returned in 1988.
  • Flawless Diction: In an era before teleprompters, she was admired for her ability to deliver complex news with “measured tone and flawless diction,” relying largely on memory and composure.

Tributes from the Doordarshan Family

The news of her demise sparked a wave of nostalgia and grief among former colleagues and viewers alike. Doordarshan National paid a heartfelt tribute on social media, highlighting her lasting legacy:

“She carved out a special place in the Indian news world with her gentle voice, precise pronunciation, and dignified presentation. Her simplicity and restraint established deep trust in the hearts of viewers.”

Veteran anchor Shammi Narang, who shared the screen with Maheshwari for many years, expressed his “utmost grief” on X (formerly Twitter). He described her as the “embodiment of grace and courtesy,” adding that she was “beautiful not just in appearance but even more so at heart.”

Final Rites

The veteran journalist’s funeral was scheduled to take place at Nigam Bodh Ghat in New Delhi at 4:00 PM on Thursday.

Sarla Maheshwari leaves behind a legacy of journalistic integrity and professional poise that continues to serve as a benchmark for broadcasters in India.
