In a landmark moment for Indian sports, 16-year-old Mayank Chakraborty has etched his name in history by becoming the first-ever Chess Grandmaster (GM) from Assam and the entire Northeast region.
The young prodigy secured the prestigious title after a stellar performance at the 8th GM Tournament in Stockholm, Sweden, making him the 93rd Grandmaster of India.
A Dominant Run in Stockholm
Mayank, who entered the tournament as an International Master, displayed clinical precision to cross the finish line. His journey to the title was marked by:
- Top Standings: Finishing first with an impressive 7/9 score.
- Elite Competition: Defeating several higher-rated opponents while maintaining an unbeaten streak in the final rounds.
- Rating Milestone: Successfully crossing the 2500 ELO rating threshold required by FIDE to officially ratify the GM title.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the teen’s historic feat, calling it a “proud moment” for the state.
“Congratulations to Mayank Chakraborty for becoming the 93rd Grand Master of India and the first from North East & Assam. Just like the chess board, may you move ahead in your life successfully,” Sarma posted.
For decades, the Northeast has been a powerhouse for football, boxing, and weightlifting. Mayank’s ascent to the pinnacle of chess breaks new ground, proving that the region is becoming a multifaceted hub for diverse sporting talent. Analysts believe this milestone will serve as a catalyst, inspiring a new generation of chess players from the “Seven Sisters” to compete on the global stage.
