DEHRADUN – Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, died on Friday after battling injuries for 18 days following a violent assault in Uttarakhand. The incident, which involved five men, has now seen charges upgraded from attempted murder to murder.
The attack occurred on December 9 in Dehradun’s Selaqui area. Anjel and his brother, Michael, were out running errands when they were confronted by a group of intoxicated individuals. Police reports indicate that the confrontation turned physical after the group targeted the brothers with racial and caste-based insults.
When Anjel stepped in to defend his brother, he was stabbed in the head and abdomen with sharp weapons and a metal bracelet. While Michael survived a head wound, Anjel remained in critical condition at a local hospital until his passing.
Dehradun police arrested five suspects—Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khwas, Sumit, and Ayush Badoni—on December 14. The accused reportedly confessed that the violence stemmed from a dispute near a local liquor shop.
Anjel Chakma was a student at a private university in Dehradun, pursuing his dreams of an MBA. His death has sparked concerns regarding the safety of students from the Northeast living in the city. Authorities have assured the family of a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
