SHILLONG – In a landmark moment for the state’s sporting history, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took to social media on Saturday to celebrate the podium finishes of two standout athletes at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026.
The Chief Minister expressed immense pride in the athletes’ performances, noting that their success marks a turning point for Meghalaya’s presence in national-level competitions.
Larityngkai Lawriniang etched her name in the record books by securing a bronze medal in the 53kg weightlifting category. This achievement marks Meghalaya’s very first medal at the Khelo India Tribal Games.
CM Sangma highlighted that Lawriniang’s success is a testament to the state’s investment in talent, as she is a product of the STAR Elite Pathway Programme.
“Congratulations to Larityngkai Lawriniang for securing Meghalaya’s first medal in the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026… Great to see the fruition of her hard work,” Sangma stated.
The celebrations continued as Verem G. Syiemlieh also secured a bronze medal, achieving what the Chief Minister described as a massive milestone. Syiemlieh’s performance earned her the distinction of being Meghalaya’s first-ever medal winner in any National Game format.
