NEW DELHI: In a chilling incident that has shaken East Delhi, a 25-year-old man allegedly murdered his mother and two younger siblings at their residence in Laxmi Nagar. The accused, identified as Yashbir Singh, surrendered to the police on Monday afternoon after committing the triple homicide.
The victims have been identified as Singh’s mother, Kavita (46), his sister, Meghna (24), and his 14-year-old brother, Mukul.
According to authorities, Singh walked into the Laxmi Nagar police station around 5:00 PM and confessed to the killings. Police teams immediately rushed to the family’s home in the Subhash Chowk area, where they discovered the three bodies.
Preliminary investigations suggest a calculated execution. Singh reportedly prepared sweets laced with dhatura seeds – a poisonous plant and fed them to his family members. Once they lost consciousness due to the toxins, he allegedly proceeded to kill them.
Motive: Debt and Despair
During interrogation, Singh cited acute financial distress as the primary driver behind his actions. The investigation has revealed a family struggling under significant economic pressure:
- Unemployment: Singh, who worked as a driver, had been unemployed for several months.
- Family Strife: His father, a truck driver, had reportedly been living separately for the past six months.
- The Insurance Angle: In a startling claim, Singh told investigators he had recently taken out a term life insurance policy worth ₹1.5 crore. He alleged that he had attempted to take his own life multiple times over the last two months, purportedly to secure the insurance payout for his family.
“The accused claimed his mother had confronted him regarding their financial situation just a day before the incident. We are currently verifying these statements,” a senior police official stated.
Current Status of the Investigation
The police have registered an FIR and formed multiple teams to piece together the exact sequence of events.
- The Wife’s Role: Singh’s wife was not at home during the time of the murders. Police are currently examining if she had any knowledge of or role in the crime.
- Forensic Evidence: Authorities are gathering evidence from the crime scene to confirm the use of dhatura seeds and the exact cause of death for the three victims.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination as the investigation continues.
