NEW DELHI – In a chilling echo of the 2012 Nirbhaya tragedy, a 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped inside a private sleeper bus in North Delhi earlier this week. The Delhi Police have arrested the bus driver and his helper (conductor) following the incident, which has sparked a massive political firestorm over women’s safety in the national capital.

The assault took place late Monday night/early Tuesday morning in the Rani Bagh area. The survivor, a resident of Pitampura and a factory worker in Mangolpuri, was walking home after her shift.

  • The Encounter: Around 12:30 AM, an orange sleeper bus with Bihar registration plates pulled up near a bus stand in Saraswati Vihar.
  • The Abduction: According to the complaint, the woman approached the bus door to ask for the time. She was then allegedly dragged inside the vehicle by the conductor.
  • The Crime: Police state the vehicle moved toward Nangloi while the driver, identified as Umesh, and his helper, Ramendra, sexually assaulted her.
  • The Rescue: The victim was dropped off in Nangloi after the bus had traveled approximately 7 kilometers. A distress call was received by the Nangloi police station at 4:45 AM on Tuesday.

Police Action and Investigation

Authorities have confirmed that both accused, who hail from Uttar Pradesh, were en route to pick up passengers for a trip to Bihar when the crime occurred.

“The vehicle used in the crime has been seized, and both accused have been sent to judicial custody following the victim’s medical examination,” a senior police official stated.

The case, initially reported in Nangloi, has been transferred to the Rani Bagh police station for further investigation. Detectives are currently examining all possible angles and checking CCTV footage along the 7-kilometer route.

“Nirbhaya Repeated”: Political Row Erupts

The incident has triggered a sharp reaction from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which slammed the BJP-led Union Government and the Delhi Police for an alleged “collapse of law and order.”

  • Arvind Kejriwal: The AAP National Convenor posted on X, “We learned nothing from Nirbhaya. This incident is a stain on the entire society.”
  • Manish Sisodia: The former Deputy CM expressed outrage, stating, “Another Nirbhaya incident in Delhi! Girls are not safe in schools, not safe in buses!”
  • Saurabh Bharadwaj: The Delhi Minister questioned the 48-hour delay in the public disclosure of the case, asking how a bus could move through central areas for hours without being intercepted.

A Dark Reflection of 2012

The details of the case—a woman being assaulted by transport staff inside a moving bus—have drawn immediate comparisons to the 2012 Nirbhaya case. In that instance, a 23-year-old student was fatally assaulted by six men in a private bus, an event that led to nationwide protests and a complete overhaul of India’s rape laws.

As the investigation continues, the focus has once again shifted to the effectiveness of night patrolling and the monitoring of private commercial vehicles in the capital.
