NEW DELHI – Tensions are mounting across university campuses following a brutal attack on a 22-year-old postgraduate student from Assam at the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of January 13, has reignited a national conversation regarding the safety of Northeast Indian students and the persistence of racial profiling in academic institutions.

The Incident: A Midnight Assault

The victim, Hirok Jyoti Das, a student of Economics, was reportedly sleeping in his hostel room when a group of fellow students forcibly entered between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM.

According to Das, the assailants did not immediately resort to violence but instead interrogated him about his identity and place of origin. Upon confirming he was from Assam, the group allegedly launched an unprovoked physical salt.

Extent of Injuries:

  • Fractured nasal bone
  • Severe facial trauma and blood clots in both eyes
  • Lacerations to the lips and temples

Due to the severity of his injuries, Das was transferred from a local medical center to a more specialized hospital in the neighboring Gaurela Pendra Marwahi district of Chhattisgarh.

Police Action and Investigation

Police in the Anuppur district have officially registered an First Information Report (FIR) against five students identified as:

  1. Anurag Pandey
  2. Jatin Singh
  3. Rajnish Tripathi
  4. Vial Yadav
  5. Utkarsh Singh

The accused have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for:

  • Voluntarily causing hurt
  • Obscene acts and words
  • Criminal intimidation
  • Common intention

Authorities are currently investigating whether racial slurs were used during the assault and if the attackers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

A Growing Pattern of Concern

This assault comes shortly after the tragic death of Michael Chakma in Uttarakhand, another incident linked to racial motives. Advocacy groups and student unions from the Northeast have expressed outrage, noting that despite various committee recommendations (such as the Bezbaruah Committee), students from the region continue to face systemic discrimination and physical threats in “mainland” India.

“The questioning of identity followed by immediate violence suggests a targeted hate crime,” stated a representative from a Northeast student collective. “Campuses should be sanctuaries, not places where your place of birth makes you a target.”

The IGNTU administration has yet to release a formal statement regarding the disciplinary actions to be taken against the accused students or new measures to ensure the safety of its diverse student body.
