Modasa-Lunawada Highway, Gujarat – A terrifying hit-and-run incident unfolded on the Modasa-Lunawada highway on Tuesday night, where a man was carried for approximately 750 meters on the hood of a speeding car after a collision, while his motorcycle remained lodged in the front bumper.2

The incident, which occurred near Babaliya village, has resulted in the detention of the car’s occupants and outrage among local commuters.

How the Horrific Incident Unfolded

The victims, Sunil Machhar and his father-in-law, Dinesh Charel, were on their way home to Lakhanpur village, Dahod district, after finishing work. Near Babaliya village, a car struck their motorcycle from behind.

  • Sunil Machhar was thrown to the roadside.
  • Dinesh Charel landed on the car’s hood.
  • The motorcycle became stuck in the front of the vehicle.

Despite the shocking nature of the collision, Deputy Superintendent of Police Kamlesh Vasava confirmed that the driver did not stop, continuing to drive for nearly a kilometer with the victim clinging to the hood and the motorcycle dragging below.

Brave Commuters Force a Stop

The dangerous journey was finally halted by the quick thinking and intervention of a family traveling on the same route. Aakash Nathani, an eyewitness, described the scene: “We soon realized that one had fallen to the side while the other was on the bonnet of the car with the motorcycle stuck in front.”

Nathani’s family recorded the scene and courageously forced the driver to stop. Eyewitness Nathani claimed the driver was disoriented, stating, “He was not in his senses. He even asked what the problem was. Strict action should be taken against him.”

Following the stop, other commuters and local residents rushed to the spot and ensured both injured motorcycle riders were transported to a hospital.

Driver Identified as Government Teacher

Police have identified the driver as Manish Patel, a resident of Kakachiya village in Mahisagar district and a teacher at Jarod government primary school. His brother, Mehu Patel was also in the car. DSP Vasava reported that the brothers claimed they were returning from Rajasthan, where they had gone to recruit labourers.

Adding to the gravity of the case, a liquor bottle was reportedly found inside the vehicle, leading to further police action.

Police Action and Charges Filed

Police have filed a case at Bakor police station in Mahisagar district against Manish Patel under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

  • Endangering human life
  • Negligence causing grievous hurt
  • Attempted culpable homicide
  • Abetment and mischief causing damage to property

Sections of the Motor Vehicle Act have also been invoked.

DSP Vasava confirmed that police are pursuing severe administrative action against the accused. “We have written to the transport department to cancel Manish’s driving licence. We will also ask the education department to take action against him,” he stated.

Both car occupants have been detained and handed over to the police station for further investigation.
