In a major turn for the Raja Raghuvanshi murder investigation, two men previously accused of destroying evidence have been cleared of all charges. The investigation, which spans from the hills of Meghalaya to the streets of Indore, has now narrowed its focus regarding the alleged cover-up. Balbir Ahirwar and Lokendra Singh Tomar were discharged after a final police report concluded there was no material evidence to support allegations that they helped destroy evidence.

Evidence Insufficient for Conviction

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, noted that while the pair were originally detained based on circumstantial leads, deeper inquiries cleared them of involvement. Both men had been out on bail since July of last year.

However, the legal path remains difficult for a third associate, property dealer Silome James. James has been officially charge-sheeted and will proceed to trial for allegedly concealing the murder weapon and stolen cash.

According to police reports, the following items were recovered based on James’ disclosures:

  • A country-made pistol and ammunition retrieved from an Indore stream.
  • ₹50,000 in cash found in his vehicle, reportedly taken from the laptop bag of a co-conspirator.
Case Origins: The Sohra Honeymoon Murder

The case centers on the May 2025 killing of Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra, Meghalaya, during his honeymoon. Investigators allege the murder was a “contract killing” masterminded by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, with assistance from her lover, Raj Kushwaha.

While the two secondary suspects have been released, Sonam remains in judicial custody as the court previously denied her bail. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is continuing to move forward with the prosecution of the primary accused and Silome James.
