The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Dr. Sangeeta Dutta, who was arrested along with her husband, Dr. Waliul Islam, on charges of allegedly torturing and sexually assaulting their two adopted children. The bail was granted today, November 18.
Dr. Dutta’s bail comes approximately twenty days after her husband, Dr. Islam, was granted bail by the same court on October 28. Dr. Islam was released on sureties of Rs 50,000 each.
The couple was arrested in May 2023 following widespread public outrage after visuals went viral on social media. The distressing footage showed their adopted minor daughter with her hands tied and allegedly being made to sit on their terrace as a form of punishment in extreme heat.
Legal Charges and Proceedings
The couple faced serious charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Furthermore, the POCSO Court had framed charges against them under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
Two separate charge sheets were filed against the couple in connection with the alleged abuse and assault. Following their arrest, the two adopted children were removed from their custody and sent to a child care home.
While the bail order has been issued for Dr. Sangeeta Dutta, specific details regarding the terms of her bail and whether she would be able to walk out of prison immediately are not yet known at the time of this report.
