NEW DELHI – Security agencies have sounded a high alert across the national capital following intelligence inputs of a major terror plot by the Pakistan-based outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The warning comes as multiple Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were recovered and defused in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir over the last 48 hours.
Multiple IEDs Recovered and Defused
While officials have not formally linked the recent recoveries to the Delhi terror plot, the timing has triggered a massive security sweep across Northern India.
- Amritsar, Punjab: An IED was discovered in a suspicious bag near the Rayya police post on Friday. SSP Sohail Qasim Mir confirmed that a bomb disposal squad successfully neutralised the device.
- Ganderbal, Kashmir: On the same day, security forces detected and defused an IED in the Safapora area. This marks the third such recovery in North Kashmir within a week, following similar incidents on Tangmarag Road and in Baramulla.
The Lashkar “Revenge” Plot
Intelligence agencies suggest that LeT is planning a strike to “avenge” the February 6 suicide bombing at the Khadija tul Kubra mosque in Islamabad, which killed 31 people. Although the Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for that attack, sources indicate LeT intends to use it as a pretext for a major offensive in India.
Potential Targets in Delhi
The intelligence alert specifically highlights high-density areas and religious sites:
- Chandni Chowk: A prominent temple in the heart of Old Delhi is cited as a primary target.
- Red Fort Area: Security has been fortified around the historic monument and its surrounding sensitive zones.
- National Capital Region: Increased surveillance is underway at major markets and transit hubs.
Shadow of the 2025 Red Fort Blast
The current alert carries significant weight due to the deadly car explosion that rocked the Red Fort area on November 10, 2025. That attack, which left 15 dead, was carried out by a module involving Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind.
Recent findings by the UN counter-terrorism monitoring team have corroborated Jaish’s involvement in the 2025 blast. The NIA is currently continuing its investigation into that case, with a Special Court recently extending the probe period to dismantle the remaining sleeper cells.
“The national capital remains on high alert. Security has been increased around major temples and markets across the city to prevent any untoward incident,” a senior Delhi Police officer stated.
