NEW DELHI – In a stunning reversal of events, the investigation into an alleged acid attack on a 20-year-old Delhi University student has revealed that the incident was fabricated and was reportedly part of a revenge plot orchestrated by the student’s own father.
The father, identified as Akeel Khan, was arrested on Monday, not for the alleged acid attack, but in connection with a sexual harassment and blackmail complaint filed against him by the wife of one of the men his daughter had accused.
Initial Complaint and Shocking Findings
The incident first came to light after the second-year BCom student, enrolled in DU’s Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board, alleged she was attacked with acid by an acquaintance, Jitender Singh, and his accomplices, brothers Ishan and Arman, near Laxmi Bai College.
However, police investigation quickly uncovered major inconsistencies. Initial forensic analysis revealed the liquid poured on the girl’s hands was not acid, but toilet cleaner taken from her own home. Furthermore, call records, CCTV footage, and witness statements provided solid alibis for the accused men, placing Jitender Singh in Karol Bagh at the time of the alleged assault. Ishan and Arman were found to be in Agra with their mother.
The Revenge Motive
Investigators now claim the student fabricated the entire case at the direct instance of her father, Akeel Khan, who sought retaliation.
It emerged that just two days prior to the alleged “acid attack,” Jitender Singh’s wife had filed a formal complaint against Khan, accusing him of sexual harassment and blackmailing her during her employment at his factory between 2021 and 2024. A case related to these charges was registered at the Bhalswa Dairy police station.
The pressure of the investigation led police to question Khan. According to officials, he ultimately confessed to orchestrating the false attack allegation to create leverage and seek revenge against the family that had accused him of rape and harassment.
Background of the Accused
The complexity of the dispute deepened with the revelation of a grim connection: the mother of the accused brothers, Ishan and Arman, had herself been a victim of a genuine acid attack in 2018. That historical incident was allegedly carried out by relatives of the DU student’s father, Akeel Khan, stemming from a property dispute.
Based on the evidence and Khan’s confession of fabricating the story, he was formally arrested on Monday on the charges related to the prior sexual harassment complaint.
