GUWAHATI – With the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Assam for a high-stakes, two-day visit on March 13 and 14. The visit marks a massive infrastructure push for the Northeast, with the Prime Minister scheduled to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects valued at over ₹32,000 crore.
The tour is strategically designed to touch key demographics, focusing on regional connectivity, the welfare of the tea garden community, and direct financial support for the state’s farmers.
Itinerary Highlights: From Bodoland to the Brahmaputra
Day 1: Kokrajhar & Guwahati (March 13)
- Kokrajhar: The Prime Minister will begin his journey in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Key highlights include:
- Launching major road projects under the Asom Mala programme.
- Inaugurating several strategic bridges to enhance local mobility.
- Flagging off three new train services to integrate the Northeast more deeply with the national rail grid.
- Guwahati: In the evening, the focus shifts to social welfare:
- Land Rights for Tea Workers: In a historic move, PM Modi will distribute land pattas (land ownership certificates) to members of the tea garden community, some of whom have lived in the state for two centuries without formal rights.
- PM-KISAN Payout: He will release the latest instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, providing a direct cash boost to thousands of farmers via digital transfer.
Day 2: Strengthening the Valleys (March 14)
- Silchar-Guwahati Expressway: The Prime Minister is expected to lay the foundation stone for a landmark expressway connecting Silchar and Guwahati. This project, estimated at ₹22,000 crore, aims to drastically reduce travel time between the Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys.
- Energy & Infrastructure: He will also dedicate the 150 MW Kopili Hydro Power Project to the nation, reinforcing the state’s energy self-reliance.
Political Significance
The visit comes at a pivotal moment as political parties gear up for the 2026 Assam Assembly Elections. By focusing on “double-engine” growth—blending massive infrastructure like the Silchar-Guwahati corridor with grassroots welfare like land rights for tea tribes—the visit underscores the Centre’s commitment to the region’s holistic development.
“The highlight will be the distribution of land rights to the tea garden community… they have lived here for 200 years but haven’t had rights until today.” — Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam
Security Measures
The state administration has enforced a high-alert security blanket across Kokrajhar, Guwahati, and Silchar. Logistical preparations are in full swing to manage the large-scale public gatherings expected at each venue.
