In a major breakthrough against cross-border drug networks, the Cachar Police intercepted a mechanized boat on the Barak River in southern Assam on Friday, seizing a massive consignment of illicit narcotics.

The swift riverine operation led to the recovery of 10,000 banned Yaba tablets and 21 grams of heroin, exposing the evolving tactics of smuggling syndicates using the state’s waterways. Two suspected drug traffickers were arrested on the spot.

Acting on precise intelligence, the Cachar Police launched a targeted search operation in the Lakhipur area under Cachar district. Law enforcement personnel successfully tracked and boarded the mechanized boat as it moved along the Barak River.

The Barak River route has recently come under intense scrutiny by security and intelligence agencies. Its vast network of waterways is increasingly being exploited by cross-border trafficking rings attempting to bypass traditional highway checkpoints.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highly praised the operational team for their alertness and precision. In a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the Chief Minister lauded the vigilance of the Cachar Police personnel and reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward the drug menace in the region.

The Growing Threat of Synthetic Drugs

The recovery of Yaba—a highly addictive, banned stimulant combining methamphetamine and caffeine—underlines a worrying trend in the Northeast. Commonly manufactured in neighboring Southeast Asian nations, Yaba is heavily trafficked across international borders into India’s northeastern corridor.

In response to this shifting threat landscape, the Assam Police and central enforcement agencies have significantly intensified their crackdowns, scaling up vigilance across known transit corridors, border entry points, and riverine routes.

An investigation is currently underway to trace the origin of the seized shipment and identify the larger network behind this river route operation.
