GUWAHATI: Just as Assam continues to reel from the passing of cultural stalwart Zubeen Garg, the state’s vibrant artistic community has been dealt a second, heartbreaking blow. Eminent flutist Dipak Sarma was 58, breathed his last on monday morning at a hospital in Chennai, following a prolonged and critical illness.

The acclaimed musician passed away around 6:15 am, plunging the music lovers and the cultural fraternity of Assam into deep mourning.

A Soul-Stirring Melodist Silenced

Celebrated for the soul-stirring melodies he conjured from his flute, Sarma had been battling severe health complications over the past several months. He was initially admitted to a hospital in Guwahati but was later airlifted to Chennai for advanced treatment when his condition critically deteriorated. Despite dedicated and sustained medical efforts, the veteran musician could not recover.

Born in Panigaon village in the Nalbari district, Dipak Sarma’s journey was one of remarkable perseverance. His mastery over the flute saw him rise from a small-town artist to one of Assam’s most cherished and respected musicians. His exceptional talent was recognized with accolades from across the region and beyond.

Sarma was renowned for his unique ability to seamlessly blend classical sensibilities with the rich nuances of Assamese folk music. His flute compositions often became the defining, evocative element in numerous Assamese musical productions, earning him a revered spot in the state’s cultural landscape. He was widely described by his peers as a humble and deeply devoted musician who carried the true spirit of Assamese folk music in his heart.

In a poignant turn of events, the revered artist’s final days were reportedly marred by financial hardship. While undergoing critical treatment, Sarma faced severe monetary constraints.
