The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital maritime arteries, turned into a scene of chaos on Wednesday. Maritime security sources and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that at least three container ships were targeted by gunfire in a series of alarming attacks that have left the shipping industry on edge.

The escalation follows a tightening grip by Iran on the waterway. Tehran initially restricted transit in retaliation for U.S.-Israeli bombardments, later doubling down in response to a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.

The most serious encounter involved a Liberia-flagged container ship northeast of Oman. The vessel’s master reported a harrowing approach by an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboat carrying three individuals. Without warning or radio contact, the gunboat opened fire with both machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

While the ship’s bridge sustained direct damage from the impacts, the outcome could have been far worse. Thankfully, the crew emerged uninjured, and the ship avoided any fires or environmental leaks. In a confusing twist, the Greek operators of the vessel noted that they had been explicitly granted permission to transit the Strait earlier that day, making the sudden assault even more unexpected.

The violence was not an isolated event. Shortly after the first report, the UKMTO confirmed that two more vessels were caught in the crosshairs:

A Panama-flagged vessel was fired upon roughly eight nautical miles west of the Iranian coast. While the crew faced a terrifying ordeal, the ship escaped without damage.

Almost simultaneously, a third container ship, also flying a Liberian flag, was targeted while heading outbound from the Strait. This vessel was forced to a halt in the water following the gunfire. Fortunately, security sources confirm that the sailors on board this third ship are also safe.

A Lifeline Under Siege

The implications of these attacks stretch far beyond the hulls of the ships. The Strait of Hormuz is a global economic pulse point; before the conflict erupted on February 28, it handled approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.

As these transit routes turn into combat zones, the safety of merchant mariners hangs in a precarious balance. For now, several crews are breathing a sigh of relief after a very dangerous day at sea, but the shadow of instability over the world’s energy supply continues to grow.
