The rain in Guwahati on Sunday night wasn’t just a seasonal downpour; it was a deluge that turned streets into rivers and familiar paths into death traps. In the heart of the rising waters, a quiet tragedy unfolded that has left the city reeling and once again questioning the safety of its infrastructure.

Payel Nath was likely just trying to navigate the same streets she had walked many times before. But as visibility dropped and the water levels rose, the line between the road and the city’s drainage system vanished. In a split second, Payel slipped into an open roadside drain, swallowed by the forceful current of the flash flood.

The panic that followed among local residents was immediate. Witnesses could do little but watch as the water claimed her, triggering a frantic call for help that brought the city police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to the scene.

For four grueling hours, rescue teams battled the rain and the dark. The search was a race against time, but the murky, fast-moving water made every meter a challenge.

The search ended when two local youths spotted Payel about 150 meters downstream from where she had first fallen. She was found unconscious in a small, exposed section of the drain. Though she was rushed to a nearby hospital with the hope of a miracle, doctors tragically declared her dead on arrival.

The loss of Payel Nath has cast a somber shadow over Guwahati, serving as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by urban “flash floods.” In response to the ongoing weather crisis and the danger to public safety, authorities have taken the following steps:

  • School Closures: All educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) area have been ordered to remain closed.
  • Emergency Monitoring: Disaster response teams remain on high alert as several parts of the city remain inundated.
  • Safety Warnings: Residents are urged to avoid waterlogged areas where hidden drains and manholes may pose a fatal risk.

Behind the headlines of “waterlogging” and “infrastructure failure” is a family now grieving for Payel. Her death has sparked a wave of anger and sorrow across social media, with many citizens calling for immediate action to cover exposed drains that become invisible—and lethal—the moment the rain starts to fall.

As Guwahati waits for the waters to recede, the memory of Sunday night remains a painful testament to how quickly a commute can turn into a catastrophe.
