Congress leader Pawan Khera has formally filed an anticipatory bail plea with the Gauhati High Court, looking to secure legal protection in a criminal case brought against him by the Assam Police’s Crime Branch.

The legal proceedings were initiated following accusations made by Khera, who claimed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held undisclosed overseas assets and maintained multiple foreign passports. These remarks prompted authorities to register a case against Khera for alleged criminal conspiracy, forgery, and defamation.

Khera’s attempt to secure relief has involved multiple judicial bodies over the past several days:

  • Initial Police Action: On April 7, Assam Police personnel arrived at Khera’s Delhi residence, though he was not home at the time.
  • Telangana Relief: Khera subsequently obtained a week of interim transit bail from the Telangana High Court on April 10.
  • Supreme Court Intervention: The Assam government challenged this decision, leading the Supreme Court to stay the Telangana High Court’s order on April 15.
  • Directing to Assam: When Khera later requested that the Supreme Court lift the stay or extend his protection, the court declined. Instead, it advised him to pursue his plea directly through the Gauhati High Court.

The High Court registry has officially processed the application. The matter is now awaiting assignment to a bench for a formal hearing.
