A tragic road accident near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Dhalai district claimed the lives of at least four labourers and left six others injured on Sunday evening. The incident occurred in the Longtarai Valley subdivision when a truck laden with stone chips overturned on a steep, poorly maintained stretch of road.
According to police officials, the truck was transporting materials from Chawmanu to the Biju Border Out Post (BOP) for ongoing border infrastructure work when the driver lost control.
The Incident: Buried Under the Cargo
The mishap took place as the heavy vehicle attempted to navigate a steep ascent. Speaking on the incident, Sonacharan Jamatia, the Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Longtarai Valley, explained how the tragedy unfolded.
“The truck failed to negotiate the ascent and overturned while reversing, causing four labourers seated atop the pile of stone chips to be thrown onto the road. Moments later, the heavy load collapsed onto them, burying them underneath,” SDPO Jamatia said.
While the labourers riding on top of the cargo bore the brunt of the impact, those traveling inside the driver’s cabin managed to survive. The four victims buried under the stone chips died on the spot.
Rescue Operations and Casualties
Personnel from the nearby Border Security Force (BSF) posts rushed to the scene immediately after the crash to launch a rescue operation. They succeeded in pulling the survivors from the wreckage and clearing the debris.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Balidhanjoy Tripura (47)
- Majida Tripura (50)
- Bathojoy Tripura (39)
- Narjoy Tripura (36)
The six injured individuals—most of whom were riding inside the truck’s cabin—were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Medical officials report that one of the injured remains in critical condition.
Investigation Underway
Local authorities have registered a case regarding the accident. A formal investigation is currently underway to determine if mechanical failure or driver negligence contributed to the crash, alongside the already reported poor road conditions.
