NAGAON/GUWAHATI – In a heartbreaking turn of events, Ruprekha Bhuyan, the victim of the brutal Morikolong dacoity, passed away on Sunday at a private hospital in Guwahati. Bhuyan, the wife of prominent physician Dr. Ranjit Saikia, had been battling for her life for 16 days following a violent robbery at her residence.

The incident, which has sent shockwaves across Assam, has now escalated into a murder investigation as the community mourns the loss of the educator and social figure.

The Night of the Horror

The tragedy began on the night of April 23 at the couple’s home in the Morikolong area of Nagaon. According to police reports, a gang of armed dacoits forcibly entered the residence with the intent to loot.

During the heist, the robbers attacked Dr. Saikia and Ruprekha Bhuyan with iron rods and sharp weapons. The criminals eventually fled the scene after looting a significant amount of cash, gold ornaments, and other valuables.

While both sustained injuries, Ruprekha Bhuyan suffered critical head trauma. She was immediately shifted to Guwahati for advanced medical care, but despite continuous efforts by doctors, she succumbed to her injuries nearly two weeks later.

Following the incident, the Nagaon Police launched a major investigation to track down the perpetrators. Law enforcement has successfully apprehended six individuals in connection with the crime.

The arrested persons include the alleged mastermind, Umar Ali, along with Mintu Hussain, Rajibur Rahman, Rejjak Ali, and Nur Hussain Ali. Authorities have stated that efforts are still underway to trace and arrest other individuals believed to be involved in the planning and execution of the robbery.

Widespread Outrage and Calls for Justice

The news of Bhuyan’s passing has triggered a wave of indignation across the state. Local organizations and citizens in Nagaon have expressed deep concern over the brazenness of the attack and the perceived rise in violent crime.

“This isn’t just a robbery; it’s a cold-blooded murder that has robbed us of a respected member of our society. We demand the fast-tracking of this case and the highest possible punishment for the culprits.” — A local community representative.

The case has put the spotlight back on the safety of citizens in residential areas. With the main suspects currently in custody, the public remains hopeful that the legal process will be swift to ensure justice for the Saikia family.
