GUWAHATI – Bhabana Sarma, the Guwahati woman whose sudden disappearance earlier this week sparked a massive social media search and police mobilization, has returned home safely. In a candid video message, Sarma revealed that her disappearance was a voluntary attempt to escape severe emotional distress and a long-standing pattern of intimidation.

Addressing the public 48 hours after she was reported missing on April 24, Sarma clarified that she left her home in Jalukbari of her own accord. Her journey took her from Paltan Bazar to Shillong, where she checked into a hotel alone with the intention of ending her life.

“At that time, I was not mentally stable. I was anxious, confused, and not thinking clearly,” Sarma stated in her video. “At one point, I thought of ending my life. Later, I realized I could not do it and decided to return.”

She also addressed a distressing message sent to her mother during the ordeal, which claimed she was “in danger.” Sarma admitted the claim was untrue, written during a moment of peak psychological crisis. She confirmed that no cab drivers or third parties were involved in her disappearance, contrary to initial public speculation.

Relationship Trauma and Blackmail

The root of her distress, Sarma alleges, stems from a turbulent two-year relationship with an individual identified as Nihar Jyoti Sarma. She claimed that despite both families being aware of the union, she was subjected to ongoing emotional pressure and threats.

Key allegations include:

  • Digital Blackmail: Threats to release private photos and videos if she attempted to end the relationship.
  • Intimidation: Threats directed at both her and her family members.
  • Prolonged Fear: A state of constant mental stress that ultimately led to her breaking point on April 24.

Sarma’s return was facilitated with the assistance of the Assam Police after she reached out to her mother from Shillong. She has since confirmed that she has filed a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the alleged harassment and is fully cooperating with the authorities.

In her closing statement, Sarma urged others who find themselves in similar situations of intimidation or mental health crises to speak up. “Do not suffer in silence,” she encouraged, emphasizing the importance of seeking help before distress leads to desperate actions.
