Guwahati is reeling from a shocking case of sexual assault in which five students of Assam Down Town University have been accused of gang-raping a young woman from Tripura at a rented residence.

As per a memorandum submitted to the University’s Vice Chancellor, the students allegedly forced their way into the victim’s room, assaulted her, and recorded the act on video.

The accused have been identified as Rubyson Mayenbam, Nongmaihanba Hanom, Alex Wahengbam, Oscar Nongthombam, and Asem Talendrajit. A separate video circulating online shows the five being confronted, where they appear to admit their involvement and apologize.

The incident has sparked intense criticism, with students on campus demanding immediate disciplinary measures and a fair investigation. Many expressed deep concern that such a crime took place within their academic community.

Political voices have also stepped in. Tripura’s Tipra Motha leader, Pradyot Manikya, voiced his support for the survivor, saying he had spoken with her directly and assured her of full assistance.

This disturbing case has reignited urgent discussions on the need for stronger campus safety measures, women’s security, and greater accountability from educational institutions. Student groups, activists, and civil society members across the Northeast are demanding strict punishment for the accused and justice for the survivor.
