Guwahati, Assam: As the state prepares for its upcoming Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially implemented a “silence period” beginning at 5:00 PM today, April 7, 2026. This mandatory 48-hour window precedes the conclusion of polling and is designed to ensure a peaceful and fair voting environment.
In accordance with Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the ECI has issued a blanket ban on several activities to prevent any last-minute influence on voters:
- Public Gatherings: All forms of physical campaigning, including rallies, processions, and public meetings, must cease immediately.
- Media Restrictions: The dissemination of any election-related content via electronic media, television, and social media platforms is strictly prohibited.
- Surveys and Polls: The display of opinion polls or any survey results is banned during this 48-hour window to prevent swaying public sentiment.
- Direct Outreach: Candidates and parties are barred from voter outreach via bulk SMS, automated phone calls, or online canvassing.
The Commission has also ordered that political functionaries and party workers who are not registered voters within specific constituencies must exit those areas immediately. Local police and district administrations have been directed to monitor hotels, guest houses, and community centers to ensure compliance.
Warning from the Chief Electoral Officer
Assam’s Chief Electoral Officer, Anurag Goel, emphasized that these guidelines apply to all candidates, political organizations, and media houses. He warned that any breach of these regulations would result in strict legal action and penalties under the law.
The announcement comes as political heavyweights conclude their final pushes. Union Minister JP Nadda expressed confidence in a BJP-led victory, citing strong grassroots implementation of central schemes.
Assam is set to cast votes in a single phase on April 9, with the final results scheduled to be announced during the counting of votes on May 4.
