Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap, arrested in connection with the Guwahati hit-and-run case that led to the death of 22-year-old Samiul Haque, was granted bail on Monday.

Kashyap, who appeared in the recent blockbuster Rudra, had been taken into custody on July 30 after authorities added the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a non-bailable offence. This came after Haque succumbed to his injuries days following the tragic July 25 accident in the Dakhingaon locality.

Haque, a Nalbari Polytechnic student who also worked part-time with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), was on his way home from a late-night project when he was hit by a speeding Mahindra Scorpio, allegedly driven by Kashyap. CCTV visuals and eyewitness testimonies confirmed the car’s role, while videos showing Kashyap’s altercation with GMC staff quickly circulated online, fueling public anger.

Initially, Kashyap was questioned and her SUV seized, but she wasn’t immediately detained since the case was booked under bailable provisions. Once Haque passed away, the charges were revised, leading to her arrest.

The case triggered statewide outrage, with Haque’s family and several organisations pressing for accountability. While these demands continue, the court’s decision to grant Kashyap bail has already stirred fresh debate over justice in the matter.
