Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has created history in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, clinching an unprecedented 102 out of 126 seats to retain power for a third consecutive term. This marks the first time any political alliance has crossed the 100-seat milestone in the state’s electoral history.

The BJP alone secured 82 seats, comfortably surpassing the simple majority threshold of 64, while its regional allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), contributed 10 seats each.

📊 Election Results at a Glance

Here is a quick breakdown of the seat distribution:

  • BJP: 82 seats (Surpassed the majority mark of 64, winning 18 additional seats)
  • AGP: 10 seats (NDA Ally)
  • BPF: 10 seats (NDA Ally)
  • Congress: 19 seats (Lowest performance since losing power in 2016)
  • AIUDF: 2 seats (Down 14 seats from 2021)
  • Raijor Dal: 1 seat (Congress ally)
  • Trinamool Congress: 1 seat (Sherman Ali Ahmed won in Mandia)

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who successfully retained his Jalukbari constituency for a record sixth term, emerged as the pivotal figure in this historic mandate. In addition to his strong leadership in Assam, Mr. Sarma’s influence played a critical role in expanding the BJP’s footprint across the Northeast and West Bengal.

State BJP President Dilip Saikia attributed the landslide victory to:

  • The party’s growth-driven agenda and commitment to development.
  • Protection of indigenous identities against the threat of illegal immigration.
  • Strong central leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Barring one, we won all seats where Hindus are in a position to elect their candidates. I thank the people of Assam on behalf of the BJP and our allies, and assure them that we will fulfil the promises we made during the election,” said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The opposition coalition struggled across the state, recording its lowest tally since the 2016 elections. The Asom Sonmilito Mancha faced a major blow as state Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi was defeated in the Jorhat constituency by BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes. Similarly, Lurinjyoti Gogoi of the Assam Janata Party lost his bid.

The Raijor Dal was a rare bright spot for the opposition, with party president Akhil Gogoi comfortably retaining the Sibsagar seat by an increased margin.

The minority-backed All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) experienced the biggest drop in its electoral fortunes, winning only two seats—a drop of 14 seats from 2021. The Congress absorbed much of the Muslim-majority constituency vote, as 18 of their 19 winning candidates are from the Muslim community.
