Kolkata — A tragic incident unfolded at Jadavpur University on Monday night when a third-year undergraduate student from the English department was found unconscious in the campus lake during an ongoing cultural festival. The student, a female, was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
According to university staff, the incident occurred around 10:30 PM, when the campus was alive with festivities organized by students. The student, who reportedly did not reside in any of the university’s on-campus hostels, was spotted floating in the lake by security personnel and other students.
“The security staff and some students got her out of the water. She was unconscious. The student was rushed to a local private medical college and hospital, where she was declared dead.
A senior hospital official confirmed the death and stated, “We informed the local Jadavpur Police Station as per protocol. A postmortem examination is mandatory in such cases to determine the exact cause of death.”
As of now, the circumstances surrounding how the student fell into the lake remain unclear. Authorities are awaiting the results of the postmortem report.
The university has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
