GUWAHATI – In a historic ceremony that underscored the BJP’s deepening roots in Northeast India, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday. The event, held at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, marks the beginning of the NDA’s third straight tenure in the state.

The ceremony was a high-profile affair, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several other top-tier leaders from the ruling coalition. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma at precisely 11:40 AM.

The swearing-in follows a landslide victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 126-member Assembly.

  • NDA Total: 102 seats
  • BJP: 82 seats (The party’s first-ever solo majority)
  • AGP: 10 seats
  • BPF: 10 seats

Sarma, 57, has now become the first non-Congress leader in Assam’s history to assume the Chief Minister’s office for two successive terms. He retained his stronghold, the Jalukbari constituency, with a staggering victory margin of over 89,000 votes.

Addressing the media following the ceremony, Sarma signaled an aggressive developmental push for his second term. Reflecting on his previous five years, he remarked that his first tenure was “just a trailer” and that the real “movie” of governance and transformation would unfold now.

The Prime Minister’s presence at the ceremony emphasized Assam’s strategic importance in the Union government’s “Act East” policy. With a solo majority for the BJP and a solid alliance in place, the Sarma administration enters its second term with an unprecedented mandate to reshape the state’s economic and social landscape.

“Together, we will continue to work with full dedication for a stronger, more developed, and prosperous Assam.”
