GOSSAIGAON, ASSAM — A somber atmosphere has gripped Banglabari village in the Gossaigaon area of Kokrajhar district following a tragic drowning incident that claimed the life of one young girl and left another missing.
The tragedy unfolded during what was supposed to be a routine fishing trip for a group of local children. According to reports:
- The children had gathered at the banks of the Madati River, which borders their village.
- Two young girls ventured into deeper sections of the water to bathe.
- They were quickly overpowered by a strong current and swept away, sparking immediate panic among their companions.
Rescue Operations and Recovery
Upon being alerted, local residents and emergency services rushed to the scene. A joint search and rescue operation was launched by villagers and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
- Isha Mardi (9): Rescuers recovered the body of 9-year-old Isha Mardi, daughter of Samuel Mardi. Her remains have been sent to Kokrajhar for a post-mortem examination.
- Beauty Mardi (6): The daughter of Ratan Mardi remains missing.
Ongoing Search
Personnel from the Tulsibil Police outpost and the SDRF are continuing their efforts to locate the missing 6-year-old. While search teams remain on the water, officials have noted that the chances of finding the child alive appear increasingly remote.
The local community remains in a state of shock as they wait for updates on the search operation.
