In a chilling incident that has shaken the Anjananagar locality, the Byadarahalli police have arrested a 27-year-old woman for the brutal murder of her boyfriend. The accused, identified as Prerna, allegedly lured the victim to her home on Tuesday afternoon, April 21, 2026, before setting him on fire while he was restrained.

The victim, Kiran (27), was a colleague of Prerna at a local telecom company; the duo had been in a relationship for two years. According to investigators, Prerna invited Kiran to her residence around 2:00 PM, claiming she wanted to surprise him with a “western-style proposal.”

Under this guise, she convinced Kiran to allow her to:

  • Blindfold him to maintain the surprise.
  • Bind his hands and feet to a chair.

When Kiran reportedly questioned the tightness of the restraints, Prerna allegedly reassured him that it was part of a popular trend from abroad.

Once Kiran was incapacitated and unable to defend himself, the situation turned lethal. Police state that Prerna doused him in a mixture of petrol and kerosene—liquids she had reportedly procured in advance—and set him ablaze. Kiran succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

In a disturbing twist, investigators discovered that the accused recorded the entire act on her mobile phone. This footage has been seized and is being treated as the primary evidence in the case.

The case was initially reported as a suicide. Prerna told first responders that she was in the bathroom when she heard a loud noise, only to emerge and find that Kiran had set himself on fire. However, the Byadarahalli Police grew suspicious due to several factors:

  • Physical Evidence: The scene did not align with a self-immolation narrative.
  • Lack of Means: Kiran arrived on a motorcycle with only a small bag and had no access to flammable materials.
  • The Recording: The mobile phone footage directly contradicted her statement.

“At first glance, it appeared to be a case of suicide, but a thorough investigation confirmed it was a calculated murder,” stated D.L. Nagesh, Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Preliminary inquiries suggest the couple suffered from frequent disputes. Prerna reportedly felt that Kiran was beginning to avoid her and distanced himself from the relationship.

While the immediate motive appears to be a “crime of passion” fueled by resentment, the police are conducting a deeper probe to determine if Prerna had any accomplices or if there were additional underlying factors. A formal murder case has been registered, and the accused remains in custody as the investigation continues.
