A disturbing incident of violence and racial targeting has surfaced in South Delhi, where a woman from Manipur and her third-gender friend from Assam were allegedly assaulted near a public park. The attack, which took place on Sunday evening near the Saket District Court complex, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for systemic change.

Escalation of Verbal Abuse

According to Delhi Police, the two victims were walking near the park when a group of men began directing derogatory remarks at them. The situation turned physical when the woman confronted the group about their behavior.

  • The Confrontation: After the victim objected to the harassment, a heated argument ensued.
  • The Assault: The accused reportedly turned violent, physically assaulting the woman.
  • Medical Care: The victim sustained minor injuries and was transported to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment and a medical examination.

Police sources indicate that this was not an isolated event; the victims had reportedly faced similar verbal harassment in that specific area on previous occasions.

“Sickening”: Political Leaders Condemn Racial Bullying

The incident has triggered a sharp reaction from Northeast leaders, highlighting the persistent issue of “mainland” discrimination.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma took to social media to express his frustration, tagging Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Sangma emphasized that racial bullying must not be tolerated as a “new normal” and called for the most stringent legal action against the perpetrators.

“Angered by the repeated attacks on North East people in mainland India… Racial bullying should not be accepted and we must act against it.” — Conrad K. Sangma, CM of Meghalaya

A Pattern of Discrimination

This assault is the latest in a string of recent reports involving the mistreatment of people from the Northeast in the capital.

  • February Incident: Just last month, a married couple in Malviya Nagar was arrested after three women from Arunachal Pradesh filed an FIR alleging racial abuse and intimidation.
  • Current Status: Delhi Police are currently recording the victims’ statements and utilizing local intelligence to identify and trace the group of men involved in the Saket assault.
