In a major push to the infrastructure landscape of Northeast India, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced the approval of ₹747.72 crore for 26 crucial road and bridge projects across Assam.
The funding, sanctioned under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), aims to transform the state’s transport network, bridging the gap between remote regions and urban centers.
Breaking Down the InvestmentThe massive allocation is divided into two primary categories designed to enhance both highway stretches and critical river crossings
Road Development (₹617.98 Crore): Approved for 10 major road projects under the CRIF scheme. These projects focus on upgrading existing corridors to improve transportation efficiency and reduce travel time for commuters and commercial vehicles.
Bridge Infrastructure (₹129.74 Crore): Sanctioned for 16 bridge projects under the CRIF Setu Bandhan scheme. This initiative specifically targets the replacement of aging structures and the construction of new links to ensure uninterrupted connectivity during Assam’s challenging monsoon seasons.
“Engine of Growth”: CM Sarma RespondsAssam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the announcement, highlighting the synergy between the state and central governments. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the CM noted that connectivity is the “engine of growth” for the state.
“Assam is picking up speed with the support of Adarniya Pradhan Mantri Shri Narendra Modi ji and Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari ji. Major investments in roads and bridges are set to ease travel, boost trade, and unlock new opportunities across the state.
According to Union Minister Gadkari, these initiatives are not just about steel and concrete but about the people of Assam. The expected benefits include:
Reduced Travel Time: Streamlining routes between agricultural hubs and markets.
Boost to Local Trade: Smoother movement of goods, lowering logistics costs for local businesses.
Enhanced Connectivity: Improving access to healthcare, education, and essential services in rural areas.
Regional Integration: Strengthening Assam’s position as the gateway to the Northeast.
A Week of Infrastructure MilestonesThe CRIF announcement follows a series of high-profile infrastructure launches in the state. Just a day prior, CM Sarma inaugurated projects worth over ₹2,200 crore in Majuli, including the connecting highway for the Majuli-Jorhat bridge. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit highlighted strategic projects like the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu and the new Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in Moran, further solidifying Assam’s role in India’s “Act East” policy.
