CHAMPHAI – In a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling, the Assam Rifles intercepted a significant consignment of foreign-origin cigarettes near the India-Myanmar border on Monday. The seized contraband, valued at approximately ₹52 lakh, was recovered during a targeted operation in the Ruantlang village area of Mizoram’s Champhai district.

The Operation

Acting on specific intelligence regarding the movement of contraband, troops of the Assam Rifles launched a focused operation in the general area of Ruantlang. During the mission, security forces intercepted suspicious movement, leading to a thorough search of the vicinity.

The search resulted in the recovery of 40 cases of foreign cigarettes, specifically:

  • 20 cases of Peacock Classic Cigarettes
  • 20 cases of V Cigarettes

In an official statement released via X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the Assam Rifles confirmed: “Assam Rifles recovered 20 cases of Peacock Classic Cigarettes and 20 cases of V Cigarettes, valued at approximately ₹52 lakh, during an operation conducted in the general area of Ruantlang, Champhai District, Mizoram on 06 January 2026.”

A Critical Transit Point

The consignment was reportedly intended for transport further inland, aimed at bypassing Indian customs and tax regulations. This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges posed by the porous international border in Northeast India.

Due to its difficult terrain and proximity to Myanmar, Champhai district remains a high-risk transit route for various illegal goods, including foreign tobacco products and other contraband.

Legal Action and Security Commitment

Following the recovery, the seized items were handed over to the Legal Metrology Department of Champhai district for further investigation and the initiation of formal legal proceedings.

The Assam Rifles reiterated its commitment to:

  • Curbing illegal activities across the northeastern states.
  • Disrupting smuggling networks that damage the local economy.
  • Enhancing border security to address broader national safety concerns.

Local authorities have lauded the operation, emphasizing that continued vigilance and seamless coordination between security agencies are vital to dismantling organized crime networks operating along the border.
