MORIGAON – In a landmark initiative to bridge nature conservation with local livelihoods, the inaugural Hadug Mela was officially inaugurated on December 26, 2025. Held at the Asingia Playground on the banks of the Hadug River, the event marks a significant step toward strengthening the green economic foundation of the communities surrounding the world-renowned Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

The three-day festival, which runs until December 28, is organized by the Pobitora Range Office in collaboration with the sanctuary’s Periphery Development Committee.

A Ritual Start for Harmony

The celebrations began with traditional religious rituals performed on the banks of the Hadug River. These ceremonies were held to invoke blessings for continued harmony between the local population and the natural world.

Following the rituals, Dipon Kathar, President of the Celebration Committee, formally inaugurated the fair in the presence of forest officials, village elders, and local representatives.

Celebrating the “Hadug” Legacy

Named after the Hadug Beel, a vital wetland within the sanctuary known for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses, the mela serves as a showcase for the eco-friendly practices of the region.

Key Highlights of the Mela:

  • Local Participation: Residents from seven surrounding villages—including Burha Mayong, Auguri, Hatigarh, Kholabhuya, Chonka, Raja Mayong, and Hadugpar—are actively involved.
  • Sustainable Crafts: Stalls feature handloom textiles, bamboo and water hyacinth crafts, and traditional jewelry.
  • Indigenous Flavors: Visitors can experience authentic local cuisine and traditional food items prepared by the Pabitora Environmental Development Committee.
  • Cultural Showcase: The event features folk music and performances by local artists, celebrating the unique heritage of the Morigaon district.

Leadership & Community Support

The mela is guided by a multi-sectoral committee that bridges conservation and community development. Dr. Phanibhushan Nath serves as Chief Advisor, supported by a team of advisors including Circle Officer Priyanka Gogoi, Forest Range Officer Pranjal Baruah, and Police OC Mun Prasad Tiwari. The executive team is led by President Dipon Kathar and Joint Secretaries Jyoti Prasad Bora and Mitul Das, ensuring a collaborative approach to the region’s green economy.
