KOKRAJHAR – A tense atmosphere prevails in the Gaurinagar area of Karigaon, Kokrajhar district, after a violent clash on Monday evening left one person dead and four others critically injured.
The incident, which broke out around 7:30 PM, reportedly stemmed from a road accident that quickly spiraled into a large-scale confrontation between two groups.
The Incident: From Accident to Arson
According to preliminary reports, the turmoil began when a Scorpio vehicle allegedly struck two individuals. Following the accident, an altercation broke out between locals and the occupants of the vehicle.
The situation escalated rapidly:
- Fatal Casualty: One man, identified as Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit (a resident of Bagaribari, Rupsi), lost his life in the ensuing violence.
- Arson: Infuriated miscreants set the Scorpio vehicle on fire, further fueling the chaos and drawing a large, panicked crowd to the spot.
- Injuries: Four other individuals sustained serious injuries during the clash.
Casualties and Medical Updates
The injured have been identified as:
- Mahesh Murmu (Karigaon)
- Sunil Murmu (Karigaon)
- Jugiraj Brahma (Anthaigaon)
- (Name of the fourth individual yet to be confirmed)
All four were rushed to the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital (KMCH). Hospital sources indicate that their conditions are being closely monitored, though they remain in serious condition.
Police Response and Investigation
Upon receiving news of the riot, a heavy police contingent arrived at Gaurinagar to restore order. While the area is currently under control, security has been significantly tightened to prevent any retaliatory violence or further escalation.
“The exact sequence of events and the underlying motive behind the clash are still under investigation,” a police official stated.
Authorities are currently working to identify the individuals responsible for the death and the subsequent arson. Local residents have been urged to maintain peace as the probe continues.
