Guwahati: In a major crackdown following the deadly car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, the Assam Police have arrested five individuals for allegedly posting “offensive and inflammatory” content on social media.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the arrests on Wednesday, asserting that the state government would maintain a “zero-tolerance approach” toward those “misusing social media to spread hatred or glorify terror.”

Swift Action Against Online Extremism

The arrests are part of an intensified effort by authorities to monitor and curb the spread of provocative narratives online in the wake of the national security alert.

“Assam Police has arrested five individuals for spreading offensive and inflammatory content online related to the recent Delhi blast. We will continue to act swiftly and firmly against such behaviour,” the Chief Minister posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Mattiur Rahman (from Darrang)
  • Hassan Ali (from Goalpara)
  • Abdul Latif (from Chirang)
  • Wajhul Kamal (from Kamrup)
  • Nur Amin Ahmed (from Bongaigaon)

Nationwide Vigilance on Social Media

The high-intensity blast near the Red Fort Metro station in Delhi on Monday evening, which tragically claimed 12 lives and injured several others, has prompted security agencies across the country to step up their vigilance.

In a related move, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have also issued a strict advisory, urging citizens to use online platforms responsibly

“It has been observed that certain individuals are posting or reacting irresponsibly to sensitive incidents on social media, including by sharing anti-national or communal content or by posting mocking emojis related to the recent Red Fort incident in which innocent civilians were martyred,” an official statement from the J&K police read.

The police further confirmed that they are “closely monitoring social media accounts and online activities to detect and take action against those involved in spreading hate, misinformation, or disrespectful content.”

Assam’s proactive arrests signal a clear message from the state government: any attempt to undermine national unity or justify acts of terror through online platforms will be met with immediate and stern legal action.
