Assam, India – In a moment of high tension and coordinated action this week, the courageous efforts of police teams from Biswanath, Majuli, and Lakhimpur districts stopped a devastating poaching plot dead in its tracks. A planned attack on Assam’s precious one-horned rhino population—a national treasure—was foiled, and three alleged conspirators were swiftly taken into custody.

This intervention is more than just a police report; it’s a profound moment of relief for all who champion the survival of the endangered rhino. It sends a clear message: Assam will not surrender its wildlife to criminal greed.

The Faces Behind the Foiled Plot

The multi-district police effort led to the immediate apprehension of three individuals whose alleged plan threatened to silence one of the gentle giants of the wild. The arrests are a tribute to the seamless intelligence sharing and quick response of the teams on the ground.

The suspects taken into custody are:

  • Muhikanta Pegu, from Dhenudhara village, Biswanath.
  • Manuj Pathari (38), residing in Mishamora, Majuli.
  • Kiran Pegu (41), from Ukhal Chuk, Majuli.

The Silence of the Weapons

The true seriousness of the threat was revealed in the follow-up search. Acting on information gathered from the arrested men, police descended upon the home of Debajit Pegu (who managed to slip away and is currently being hunted) in New Dandi, Biswanath. There, they recovered the chilling tools of the intended crime:

  • One .303 caliber rifle—a deadly weapon meant for a magnificent, protected animal.
  • Nine 70 mm 12-bore cartridges—enough ammunition to carry out a tragedy.

The recovery of these serious firearms ensures they will never be used against our wildlife.

A case has been launched with the investigation being managed directly by the ASP (Crime) in Biswanath. The focus is now on relentlessly tracking down the absconding suspect, Debajit Pegu, and cutting out the root of the criminal network that preys on our irreplaceable heritage.
