The tragic and mysterious passing of Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg in Singapore has escalated into a major criminal investigation, as the Assam Government, fueled by immense public demand for justice, announces a decisive two-day deadline for the surrender of key accused Shyamkanu Mahanta.

The heartthrob of Assam, Zubeen Garg, died on September 19th while in Singapore for the Northeast Festival.

The State Government’s Firm Hand

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma made a powerful statement today (September 29), asserting that festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, would be arrested within 2-3 days.

“We will not spare anyone,” the Chief Minister has repeatedly assured the mourning state.

To secure Mahanta’s arrest from a foreign soil, the government has formally requested the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore. This move is critical, as CM Sarma explained, to “ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities—giving us access to case details and assistance to bring back the accused and secure justice.”

Police Team Deploys for International Action

Responding to the two-day ultimatum, a dedicated team of Assam Police officers, including CID SSP Sudhakar Singh and ASP Tarun Goel, is scheduled to depart for Singapore tomorrow (September 30) to take necessary action. Mahanta’s arrest is expected to be executed in Singapore under the legal framework provided by the MLAT.

In a parallel development, the SIT has reportedly gathered “significant information” regarding the present location of the absconding manager, Siddharth Sharma, indicating his arrest in India is also close at hand.

Vandalism Not Tolerated: NSA Invoked

Amidst the legal pursuit of the main accused, the government has also taken a strong stand against the accompanying civil unrest. Ajoy Phukan and Victor Das, arrested for their role in fuelling vandalism and unrest outside Siddharth Sharma’s apartment, will face charges under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

As the police prepare for a major international operation, the government’s message is clear: justice for Zubeen Garg is the highest priority, and legal procedures will be enforced strictly, both at home and abroad.
