A 35-year-old employee of the Cachar District Commissioner’s office in Silchar, Assam, has been arrested on charges of allegedly raping a female colleague, police confirmed on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Saumitra Nath, reportedly committed the crime on September 24. According to the victim’s complaint, she accepted a ride home from Nath late in the evening after their shift.

“As per her complaint, he offered her a ride from the office late in the evening. Upon reaching her residence, he insisted on entering the house. When she refused, he allegedly forced his way in and raped her,” said Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta.

The woman filed a complaint with the Silchar Sadar Police Station on Thursday, leading to Nath’s arrest at his Silchar home. Nath was subsequently produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. The police have recorded statements from both the victim and the accused, and a further investigation is underway.

Cachar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav called the incident “unfortunate” and assured the victim of the office’s support. He stated that “proper legal actions will be taken as per law against the accused.” The DC also confirmed that the woman’s request for a transfer out of the Silchar headquarters will be addressed according to rules.
