Guwahati, August 22: In a significant development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has temporarily deferred the transfer of the Principal of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) following strong opposition from hospital staff and healthcare organizations.

The transfer order, issued earlier this week, quickly ignited protests within the GMCH community. Nursing associations, medical staff, and various healthcare bodies raised concerns that the move could disrupt both the administrative stability and the quality of patient care at the state’s premier medical institution.

In response, memorandums were submitted to the state government, urging it to reconsider the decision. Protesters argued that the leadership change, if executed abruptly, might negatively impact the hospital’s ongoing services and future planning.

Taking note of the situation, the Chief Minister intervened and assured stakeholders that the transfer has been put on hold for now. Government officials confirmed that the matter is under review and further discussions will be held before a final decision is made.

The CM’s intervention has brought temporary relief to GMCH staff and supporters, although uncertainty still looms regarding the long-term leadership of the institution.

Stakeholders are hopeful that the government will take a holistic view of the hospital’s needs before initiating any leadership changes.
