U.S. President Donald Trump has made it clear that American ground troops will not be deployed in Ukraine, but he has signaled a willingness to provide air support as part of future security guarantees.

Speaking in an interview, Trump said Americans can have his “assurance” that there will be no “boots on the ground” in Ukraine. The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions in Washington and European capitals over the framework for a long-term peace deal and the security architecture of Ukraine.

While ruling out ground deployments, Trump suggested that the U.S. could still contribute through air power and defense systems, including fighter jets, drones, and missile defense capabilities. “We are looking at ways to stop people from being killed,” he said, emphasizing that any U.S. role would be limited to the skies.

European leaders, meanwhile, are exploring options for deploying troops under their own national commands, rather than under NATO, with U.S. backing from the air. According to officials, security planners are working on guarantees that would not escalate the war further but still offer Ukraine credible protection against future Russian aggression.

The move reflects a shift in U.S. strategy—away from direct military involvement on the ground and toward a support role in partnership with European allies. Analysts note that the decision could ease domestic political concerns in the United States, where public opinion remains wary of another overseas ground conflict, while still maintaining pressure on Moscow.

As discussions continue, NATO leaders and European governments are expected to finalize potential arrangements in the coming weeks. Ukraine’s security remains at the center of negotiations, with Kyiv pushing for firm commitments even as the prospect of peace talks remains uncertain.
