KAZIRANGA – In a moment that has sent ripples of excitement through the global conservation community, a critically endangered Gharial was recently sighted within the lush confines of Kaziranga National Park.

While the park is world-renowned as the ultimate stronghold for the one-horned rhinoceros, this rare appearance serves as a vivid reminder of the park’s incredible and often surprising biodiversity.

The sighting occurred during the quiet hours of an early morning safari in the Burhapahar Range, specifically near the Dipholu Camp. The reptile, distinguished by its iconic long, narrow snout, was observed by a group of tourists and guides who described the encounter as a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The moment was immortalized by travel guide Shishukanta Nath and tourist Diganta Kumar Sarma, whose photographs and videos quickly went viral. For many, seeing a gharial in the wild is a distant dream, as they are among the rarest reptiles on the planet.

The Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is currently listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Once found across the major river systems of the Indian subcontinent, their population has dwindled significantly due to habitat loss and river pollution.

“This sighting is a fantastic sign for the riverine ecosystem of Assam. It suggests that our conservation efforts and the health of the Brahmaputra’s tributaries are trending in the right direction.” — Wildlife Expert Perspective

Kaziranga: Beyond the Rhino

Though the rhino remains the “poster child” of Kaziranga, the UNESCO World Heritage Site continues to prove it is a sanctuary for a vast array of life. The Burhapahar Range, with its unique mix of forested hills and sprawling wetlands, remains a critical corridor for:

  • Rare mammals and migratory birds.
  • Diverse reptilian species.
  • The elusive Bengal Tiger and Asian Elephant.

For wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, this latest discovery adds yet another layer of mystery and allure to one of India’s most iconic natural landscapes.
