The legal proceedings surrounding the tragic passing of legendary singer Zubeen Garg saw a significant development today as a fast-track court rejected the bail application of accused Shyamkanu Mahanta.

Despite a spirited defense from his legal counsel, the court remained unmoved, ensuring that Mahanta remains in judicial custody.

The court’s decision was reportedly influenced by several grave allegations presented during the hearing. According to sources, the prosecution highlighted:

  • Negligence regarding health: It is alleged that Mahanta provided alcohol to Garg despite being fully aware of the singer’s fragile medical condition.
  • Lack of Care: Concerns were raised that Mahanta failed to arrange for necessary medical intervention or security, even as Garg’s health reportedly deteriorated.
  • Flight Risk: The court was informed that Mahanta allegedly fled to Malaysia shortly after the incident occurred, complicating the initial investigation.

Outside the courtroom, the situation remains equally tense. Anita Deka Mahanta, the wife of the accused, addressed the media to reiterate her husband’s innocence and address a controversial audio clip circulating on social media.

“I will say again and again, an innocent person has been put behind bars,” she stated. She further claimed that authorities in Singapore had previously labeled the incident an accidental death with no evidence of foul play.

Threats and Defamation Claims

Anita Mahanta also took the opportunity to distance herself from a viral audio recording that has sparked public outrage. She claimed:

  • Identity Theft: The voice in the clip is not hers and is being used to tarnish her reputation.
  • Safety Concerns: Since the clip went viral, she has reportedly received death threats, including threats of acid and petrol attacks.
  • Legal Action: She confirmed that formal complaints regarding these threats and the audio clip were lodged with the CID on October 6, 2025, and subsequently transferred to the Panbazar Police on October 9.

As the case continues to unfold, the rejection of this bail plea ensures that Shyamkanu Mahanta will remain behind bars while the legal system scrutinizes the events leading up to the loss of Assam’s beloved cultural icon.
