TAMULPUR, Assam — A joyful journey to a cultural celebration turned into a scene of tragedy late Friday night, April 24, as a road accident claimed the life of a young Bihu dancer and left several others hospitalized.
The incident occurred near Nowakhat village along the Tamulpur–Nagrijuli road. A minivan, which was transporting members of the Bhaskarjyoti Bihu Husori Dal from Haribhanga (Nalbari district), collided head-on with an oncoming trailer truck.
The collision proved fatal for Nishamani Haloi, a dedicated member of the troupe and a resident of Nij Jhargaon, Tamulpur. She reportedly died at the scene.
At least 11 other members of the troupe sustained serious injuries. The group, consisting of approximately 35 performers, was traveling to Tamulpur to participate in an open Bihu competition in Bangalipara when the disaster struck.
Identified injured individuals include:
- Arun Medhi, Bidyut Das, Jagat Ray, Ankita Das, Ratan Kalita, Nitu Baruah, Shivani Baruah, Kabyashree Saruwa, Dibakar Moran and driver Pankaj Baishya
Due to the severity of their injuries, five of the victims have been referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced medical care.
Official Response
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the tragedy via social media, expressing his profound grief. On his official X handle, the Chief Minister offered his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed. He also extended his support to the injured, wishing them a speedy recovery.
As the Bihu season is a time of immense cultural celebration in Assam, this incident has cast a shadow of mourning over the community, particularly in Nalbari and Tamulpur. Investigation into the exact cause of the collision is ongoing.
