A somber atmosphere has gripped the Silsako Beel area following a tragic drowning incident on Friday that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy and left an 11-year-old fighting for his life.

The victims have been identified as Bitu Nath (15) and Sunmoni Das (11).

According to local reports, the incident occurred when both boys accidentally slipped into the water, sparking immediate panic among onlookers. The quiet afternoon turned into a scene of desperation as residents rushed to the bank to launch a rescue mission.

While the community successfully pulled Sunmoni Das from the water, Bitu Nath disappeared beneath the surface, prompting an urgent call to emergency services.

Recovery and Aftermath

A specialized team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was deployed to the site. After several hours of intensive searching, divers eventually recovered Bitu Nath’s body. He was tragically pronounced dead, leaving the local community in mourning.

  • Bitu Nath (15): Deceased.
  • Sunmoni Das (11): Currently undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

In the wake of the tragedy, local residents have voiced significant frustration regarding the safety of the site. Many have pointed to a glaring lack of protective barriers or warning signs around the beel, arguing that this loss of life could have been prevented with basic safety infrastructure.

“We have been worried about this for a long time. There are no fences, no warnings—it was an accident waiting to happen,” said one resident.

While authorities have initiated formal procedures to investigate the drowning, the incident has intensified calls for the government to secure the perimeters of open water bodies within the city to prevent further heartbreak.
