The Indian football community is in mourning following the passing of Gilbertson Sangma, the legendary “Golden Boy of Assam Football.” Sangma passed away at approximately 7:00 am today, April 4, at his residence in Kahilipara, Guwahati, following a prolonged illness.

His death marks the end of an era for North East Indian sports, leaving behind a legacy that inspired generations of athletes.

Born in Dibrugarh in 1954, Sangma’s passion for the sport was ignited by watching local greats like Kamala Nath and Subir Choudhury. His professional journey took flight in 1971 when he joined the Assam Police. Training alongside his idols at Dergaon, he quickly transitioned from a dreamer to a formidable force on the pitch.

Between 1971 and 1987, Sangma enjoyed a stellar 17-year career characterized by his exceptional goal-scoring ability and natural flair.
