DHAKA – Tension gripped the capital’s Tejgaon area on Wednesday night after unidentified assailants shot dead a leader of a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)–affiliated organization and left another man critically injured.
The incident occurred around 8:40 PM, Wednesday, at Tejturi Bazar, in close proximity to the popular Bashundhara City Shopping Complex.
Incident Details
According to police reports, the victims were targeted by unidentified gunmen who opened fire before fleeing the scene.
- The Deceased: Azizur Rahman Musabbir, former general secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit of the Swechchhasebok Dal (the volunteer wing of the BNP). He was rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him dead.
- The Injured: Abu Sufian, general secretary of the Karwan Bazar Van Owners’ Association. He is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division, Fazlul Karim, confirmed the attack, noting that several rounds were fired during the ambush.
News of the killing sparked immediate outrage. Protesters gathered at the SAARC Fountain intersection, blocking one of the city’s busiest arteries and causing significant traffic disruption throughout the evening.
Order was eventually restored after police and army personnel arrived at the spot to clear the road and manage the crowd.
Investigation Underway
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Dhaka Metropolitan Police have cordoned off the area and are currently:
- Reviewing CCTV footage from nearby establishments.
- Conducting forensic analysis of the crime scene.
- Questioning witnesses to identify the assailants.
Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible for the violence.
