DIPHU: In a sensational press conference that has rocked the political landscape of Karbi Anglong, the District Congress Committee has leveled grave allegations of corruption, moral bankruptcy, and illegal arms possession against Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).
Karbi Anglong District Congress President Ratan Engti displayed photographs of high-end liquor bottles, claiming that the CEM indulges in alcohol costing ₹95,000 per bottle.
“While contractors are waiting for their pending bills and teachers are struggling without salaries for months, Tuliram Ronghang is blowing ₹4.80 crore annually on liquor alone,” Engti told reporters. He further took a swipe at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling Ronghang the CM’s “foster son” and questioning why the “tiger-like” stance against corruption has disappeared in this case.
Key Allegations:
- Extravagant Lifestyle: Ratan Engti displayed photos of liquor bottles worth ₹95,000 each, alleging that Tuliram Ronghang consumes these daily. He claimed Ronghang spends ₹4.80 crore annually on alcohol alone while ignoring the plight of contractors, job seekers, and teachers who have not received salaries for months.
- Ideological Hypocrisy: The Congress leader questioned how the RSS and BJP overlook such corruption, given the party’s slogans like “Na Khaunga, Na Khane Doonga” (Won’t take bribes, won’t let others take them) and the ideals of leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Deendayal Upadhyaya.
- The Kheroni Violence: Engti blamed Ronghang’s “double standards” for the violence in Kheroni on December 22-23. He alleged that Ronghang threatens to evict Karbi people from PDR-VGR lands but promises Bihari settlers they won’t be evicted, creating communal tension.
- Evidence Tampering & Illegal Arms: Following the burning of Ronghang’s old house in Kheroni, the Congress alleged that the CEM used bulldozers to quickly clear the debris to hide evidence. Engti claimed that AK-series rifles and SLR rifles were found in the ashes of the burnt house and demanded a CBI investigation, questioning why the police didn’t conduct a forensic test.
- Job Scams & Financial Scandals:
- Allegations were made that Ronghang’s wife and brother-in-law run a “job market,” collecting ₹40–50 lakh per government post.
- A ₹300 crore scandal related to “Namikaran” (naming/renaming) was also alleged.
- Claims surfaced regarding a tea garden purchase involving crores of rupees and a person named Raktim Hazarika.
- Moral Misconduct: The Congress revisited past allegations involving a young woman named Marry Teronpi, claiming she had recently called Ratan Engti seeking justice for alleged sexual exploitation, asserting that her family was previously threatened into withdrawing the case and leaving Diphu.
Silence of the BJP and RSS
“Where is the ‘Na Khaunga, Na Khane Doonga’ policy now?” Engti questioned, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s famous anti-corruption slogan. He expressed surprise that the RSS and the BJP leadership continue to shield Ronghang despite such “visible moral and financial degradation.”
