Nagaon, Tuesday: A devastating road accident on National Highway 36 near Panikhaity Swahid High School on Tuesday afternoon resulted in the death of two pedestrians, while another sustained critical injuries, sparking grief and anger among local residents.

The mishap took place at approximately 3 pm when a Hyundai Venue bearing registration number AS-02-AV-5099, allegedly travelling at a high speed, went out of control and struck three pedestrians walking along the roadside. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was being driven recklessly on a busy stretch of the highway that sees regular pedestrian movement, especially due to nearby residential areas and a school.

All three victims suffered severe injuries in the impact. Local people immediately rushed to help and transported them to Borghat Bypass SIIMS Hospital. Despite medical intervention, two of the injured later succumbed to their injuries.

The deceased were identified as Rejimul Haque (42), son of late Motiur Rahman from Katani Gaon, and Puja Laskar (17), daughter of Biren Laskar of Hatigaon under Nagaon Police Station. Their untimely deaths have left their families shattered and cast a pall of sorrow over the community.

The third victim, Tahiruj Zaman, son of Moniur Zaman, is currently undergoing treatment and remains in a critical condition, hospital sources confirmed.

In the aftermath of the incident, residents voiced strong concern over frequent accidents on NH-36, blaming overspeeding and inadequate traffic monitoring. Locals alleged that rash driving has become common on the highway, endangering the lives of pedestrians and commuters on a daily basis.

The incident has once again prompted calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, installation of speed-control measures near schools and residential zones, and development of safer pedestrian infrastructure, including footpaths and warning signs.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and have initiated an investigation. Details regarding action against the driver and the exact cause of the accident are yet to be disclosed.

As the area mourns the loss of two lives, the tragedy highlights the severe consequences of reckless driving and reinforces the urgent need for improved road safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
