Following the resignation of KP Oli due to violent protests against corruption and nepotism, Nepal has made history by appointing Sushila Karki as its first female Prime Minister on September 12, 2025. A former Chief Justice with a strong legal background, Karki was chosen with the backing of Gen-Z protest leaders and the Nepal Army Chief, marking a significant political shift supported by the youth. The widespread unrest that led to this transition stemmed from youth-led demonstrations demanding transparency, freedom, and an end to systemic corruption. These protests, which resulted in casualties and political turmoil, culminated in a collective decision by over 5,000 activists endorsing Karki’s leadership as a path toward reform.

Karki began her legal career in 1979 and became Nepal’s first female Chief Justice in 2016. Known for her uncompromising stance against corruption, she presided over landmark cases, including the conviction of a sitting minister for graft, a first in Nepal’s history. Her rulings on citizenship rights and peacekeeping missions have also been pivotal.

Despite facing political opposition, including an impeachment motion in 2017, Karki maintained her commitment to judicial integrity. As interim Prime Minister, she faces the critical task of restoring peace and preparing the country for upcoming elections. Her appointment has drawn praise both domestically and internationally, with leaders like India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi extending congratulations.

Karki’s leadership represents hope for transparent governance and greater inclusion, highlighting a historic milestone for women’s empowerment in Nepal.
