Silchar: Five Bangladeshi students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar in Assam have been suspended following violent clashes on campus. These students, who are recipients of scholarships from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), were involved in an attack on their fellow Bangladeshi students on September 8, armed with rods, knives, and screwdrivers. Several students were injured in the incident, with two requiring intensive care for severe head injuries at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
An internal inquiry found that the accused students were under the influence of narcotics during the attack, with drugs also recovered from their hostel rooms. As a result, the disciplinary committee suspended them for two semesters—equivalent to one academic year—and expelled them from their hostel accommodation.
The NIT Silchar administration has decided to deport these students as they are barred from attending classes or residing on campus. Suspension orders have been shared with Cachar Police, ICCR’s Guwahati regional office, and other concerned authorities. ICCR officials have visited the campus to meet affected students and review the investigation.
This incident has highlighted serious disciplinary concerns within the campus and has prompted the institute to enforce strict measures. NIT Silchar stresses its zero-tolerance policy toward violence and drug use to safeguard a secure and conducive learning environment for its students.
